PMA were appointed, via an invited competitive tender, to reconfigure the existing St Pancras Public Mortuary. The existing mortuary occupied the ground floor of a two storey 1950’s council building and due to space restrictions and the poor quality of accommodation, could not meet current standards for mortuary services, neither for the technical/clinical needs nor for the needs of the visiting public.

The mortuary was extended and reconfigured to provide modern post mortem facilities, a dedicated post mortem room for forensic or infected cases, increased refrigerated body storage, improved vehicular/service access and new public waiting/visiting spaces. New building services and fabric improvements have also significantly reduce the buildings carbon reliance.

In November 2015, the building was Highly Commended in the 'Best End of Life Care Development' category of the BBH Building Better Healthcare Awards. The judging panel said 'This is a wonderful space for relatives to visit. It used to be a bit grim and now it is a civilised experience. It is nicely arranged with good views to the outside'.
