The existing tired and unloved common rooms were located in the basement of this student halls and UCL wanted to refresh these to make them more attractive to students and better suited for social interaction and study, mediating between the study bedroom and the main teaching clusters on campus.

The design adopts a ‘kit of parts’ approach creating a variety of settings to study individually, collaboratively or just relax. Door blanks are suspended from ceilings to improve acoustics and various study booths inserted between existing structural columns. New adaptable seating permits a variety of settings for relaxing.
