PMA completed the comprehensive refurbishment of the Bloomsbury Theatre as a key component of the proposed masterplan for UCL’s Bloomsbury campus. The project involved the creation of a new studio theatre, offices and ancillary spaces in addition to the refurbishment of the main auditorium and foyer space, but also involved the coordination and collaboration with four other design teams responsible for adjoining projects on campus.

This involved extensive consultation with all stakeholders within the University as well as a series of interface workshops with the wider design teams.

The project also involved the creation of a new independent 100 seat studio theatre beneath the theatre’s main stage, together with new foyer spaces, green rooms and toilets, providing the University with a flexible suite of spaces.

The studio theatre provides a new venue to host a wide variety of activities ranging from lectures, music recitals, rehearsals, stand-up comedy and film nights.

Taking its cue from the existing building, the design features exposed board marked concrete, fair face brickwork and troughed concrete ceilings, with new services exposed and specific elements executed in finer oak joinery.

“...a complicated large-scale renovation of the theatre, bars and foyer spaces as well as the creation of a new studio space below the main stage.”
