We were appointed in July 1994 to develop proposals for the construction of a new nursery and reception classrooms, forming an ‘Early Years Wing’, together with the extension, adaptation and alteration with the School.
The project entailed extensive discussion with the school, board of governors and the local authority’s education department. The various sections of work were completed in phases to allow the School to remain in use during the contract period. The design of the Nursery deliberately contrasts with the system-built original school and provides a distinctive identity and series of spaces relating to the contrasting activities of the Early Years Wing.
The school has bucked the trend and can be justifiably proud of the building which raises the awareness of the connection between architecture and children.Amanda Bailleau, RIBA journal August 1998
