UCL’s School of Life and Medical Sciences incorporates the faculties of Life Sciences, the Medical School, Brain Sciences and Population Health Sciences. Whilst a new permanent student hub is planned as part of the Bloomsbury masterplan, we were appointed to transform an existing biochemistry teaching laboratory with a temporary student hub.

The new student hub creates a vibrant new setting overlooking the South Quad, in the heart of the Bloomsbury Campus, for students to study, relax and work collaboratively. Redundant teak lab benches were recycled and used as screens to define and enclose study areas and former wall cupboards were transformed into light boxes incorporating images from UCL’s histology archive.

The JDS Haldane student hub opened in April 2013 and provides quality space for mixed mode of study and relaxation. Thanks to the architects for their vision and patience

Sir Malcolm Grant, UCL Provost
