Paul Murphy Architects were invited to develop design options for the improvement of the main entrance of Maidstone Hospital. The original hospital was completed in 1983 and was one of the first to use the DHSS Standard Nucleus Modular design. A later phase was added in 1993.

Partly as a result of this later addition and the arrangement of the car parking, the main entrance lacks visual and physical presence and also lacks a sense of arrival internally. The vehicle/ambulance drop off area has become congested and no longer served its purpose.

In short, the hospital has outgrown its entrance. Our proposals therefore sought to examine ways of addressing each of these points in turn.
