PMA were appointed via an invited competitive tender, to reconfigure the existing St Pancras Public Mortuary. The existing mortuary occupied the ground floor of a two storey 1950’s council building and could not meet current standards for mortuary services, neither in terms of the technical/clinical needs nor for the needs of the visiting public.
The mortuary is to be extended and reconfigured to provide modern post-mortem facilities, a dedicated post mortem room for forensic or infected cases, increased refrigerated body storage, improved vehicular/service access and new public waiting/visiting spaces. New building services and fabric improvements will also significantly reduce the buildings carbon reliance.
This is a wonderful space for relatives to visit. It used to be a bit grim and now it is a civilised experience. It is nicely arranged with good views to the outside
